The U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava witnessed a strong performance from Hungary, with their athletes securing three medals in Greco-Roman wrestling. Among the standout performers was László Koppány, who clinched a silver medal in the 130kg weight class. Koppány demonstrated formidable skill as he progressed through the tournament, overcoming challengers from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, he faced a tough final against Russia’s reigning world and European champion, Ali Ilyasov, and ended with a silver following an 8–0 defeat.
Another notable achievement came from Zalán Toplak, a wrestler from Ferencváros, who earned a bronze medal in the 77kg category. After entering the repechage rounds, Toplak fought his way to the podium, ultimately defeating Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili with a decisive 10–2 victory. This accomplishment marked the first time Toplak had secured a medal at the World Championships, highlighting a significant milestone in his wrestling career.
Petro Zsitovoz also contributed to Hungary’s medal tally with a bronze in the 67kg category. Zsitovoz showcased resilience and skill in his placement match against Egypt’s U23 world champion, Mohamed Abdelrehim. After falling behind early in the bout, he mounted a comeback to secure an 11–3 victory, ensuring his place on the podium.
The championships commenced with the Greco-Roman wrestling events, where Hungary was represented by eight athletes among a larger 22-member delegation. The Hungarian wrestlers’ performance in Bratislava underscored their prowess and competitiveness on the international stage, earning them recognition and commendations for their efforts.
