Germany and Greece Explore Submarine Construction and Enhanced Defense Collaboration

Germany is looking to deepen its defense cooperation with Greece through a potential submarine construction program, focusing on the development of modern Type 212 CD submarines. During a recent meeting at the Crete Firing Range, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias engaged in discussions about this initiative. Pistorius emphasized Greece’s status as a trusted partner and suggested that the construction could take place within Greece.

The Hellenic Navy’s interest in expanding its submarine fleet is a long-term plan, with concrete steps expected to be taken after 2030. The process of selecting new vessels is likely to commence following Greece’s national elections in 2027. This collaboration is part of a broader effort to enhance defense ties between the two nations, which includes joint military training, improved operational coordination, and the acquisition of compatible military equipment.

In addition to the submarine project, the ministers discussed various aspects of military cooperation. This includes the involvement of Greek and German forces in the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR), pilot training in Kalamata, and Greece’s expressed interest in acquiring IRIS-T SLS air defense missiles. These talks signify an ongoing effort by both countries to explore opportunities for joint military production and training.

Greece is committed to strengthening its defense partnership with Germany, as highlighted by Dendias. The focus is on building a comprehensive relationship that includes hosting German forces and fostering greater military synergy. This strategic collaboration aims to ensure both nations can effectively address evolving security challenges.

The discussions between Greece and Germany reflect a mutual desire to expand defense cooperation and leverage each other’s strengths in military technology and training. As both countries continue to explore these opportunities, the potential for joint submarine production marks a significant step forward in their defense partnership.
