Economic Concerns Rise as Gaza Withdrawal Tied to Hamas Disarmament

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has firmly rejected the notion of pulling Israeli troops out of Gaza until the militant group Hamas is entirely disarmed. This decision comes in response to a US-supported proposal that aimed to couple military withdrawal with a comprehensive peace accord. According to Israeli authorities, intelligence reports suggest that Hamas is actively continuing its efforts to recruit fighters, reconstruct its military capabilities, and replenish its arsenal. Israel argues that a premature withdrawal of troops would enable Hamas to reestablish dominance over Gaza and reignite security threats.

The US-brokered ceasefire proposal includes several key elements: Hamas would need to relinquish its weapons, dismantle its network of tunnels, and agree to a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces. Furthermore, the plan proposes the formation of a Palestinian technocratic government, the deployment of an international security force, and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. Despite these diplomatic efforts, tensions remain high as the conflict persists.

In recent days, Israeli airstrikes have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 17 individuals, including children. This escalation follows a tragic incident in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, where rescue operations uncovered over 100 bodies from the debris of a significant Israeli airstrike conducted in November 2023. The recovery process is ongoing, with many victims feared to be still trapped beneath the rubble, prompting a somber mass funeral held by Palestinians.

The violence erupted following a deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, targeting southern Israel. This assault claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 people and led to the abduction of 251 hostages, sparking the current hostilities in Gaza. As the conflict drags on, the international community continues to seek a resolution, though the path to lasting peace remains fraught with challenges.
