Bavaria, Hungary Strengthen Economic Relations in Söder-Magyar Meeting

Marking a significant diplomatic milestone, Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder traveled to Budapest for discussions with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. This visit signifies the renewal of high-level political relations between Bavaria and Hungary, which have been dormant for the past eight years.

During their meeting, Söder and Magyar concurred on the creation of a joint intergovernmental commission aimed at bolstering collaboration across several fields, including trade, artificial intelligence, innovation, pharmaceuticals, defense, and higher education. Both leaders underscored the necessity of enhancing Europe’s competitive edge and advocated for a reevaluation of the proposed phase-out of internal combustion engines.

The dialogue also highlighted Hungary’s renewed efforts to align more closely with the European mainstream, a development that Söder welcomed. The strong economic ties between Bavaria and Hungary were a focal point of the talks, as major Bavarian corporations employ tens of thousands of individuals within Hungary, illustrating a robust bilateral economic relationship.

Looking ahead, the leaders have scheduled their next bilateral meeting for 2027, indicating a commitment to sustained cooperation and dialogue. This renewed engagement between Bavaria and Hungary is expected to pave the way for enhanced partnerships and mutually beneficial initiatives in the coming years.
