Erdoğan’s Warning to Greece Sparks Economic Concerns Over Aegean Island Militarization

Tensions between Türkiye and Greece have escalated as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a stern warning to Athens over its increasing military activities on the Aegean islands. Erdoğan asserted that Ankara would not tolerate actions perceived as breaches of international agreements, specifically those concerning demilitarized zones. His comments came in the aftermath of a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, where he emphasized Türkiye’s desire for amicable relations with Greece while urging the nation to cease its military deployments on the islands, which Türkiye claims should remain demilitarized under existing treaties.

Greece, on the other hand, insists that its military presence on these islands is crucial for addressing security concerns and asserts its sovereign right to defend its territory. Disputes between the two nations extend beyond military deployments, with ongoing disagreements over maritime boundaries and proposed marine parks in the Aegean Sea. Erdoğan reiterated that Türkiye harbors no ambitions to seize land from other countries but is steadfast in protecting its perceived rights. He cautioned that Athens’ disregard for international agreements could heighten regional tensions and urged Greece to draw lessons from historical conflicts.

In his diplomatic engagements, Erdoğan expressed Türkiye’s intent to expand its involvement with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, while simultaneously maintaining robust ties with Western countries. During his visit, he held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, focusing on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and security issues in the Black Sea. Erdoğan underscored the importance of establishing enduring security measures for commercial shipping, noting the increasing risks faced by Turkish vessels in the region.

Furthermore, Erdoğan addressed Türkiye’s defense collaboration initiatives with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, as well as efforts to resolve the longstanding PKK conflict. He also touched upon Türkiye’s aspirations to rejoin the US F-35 fighter jet program. In the interim, Türkiye is committed to advancing its domestically developed KAAN fighter jet, even as negotiations with the United States continue. These discussions reflect Ankara’s broader strategy to bolster its defense capabilities while navigating complex international relationships.
