The United States has established a June deadline for ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict and proposed Miami as the venue for next week’s peace negotiations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed. This represents a significant advancement in American diplomatic engagement.
In remarks to reporters released early Saturday, Zelensky explained that Washington’s proposal to host talks in Miami would be unprecedented in the nearly four-year war. This would mark the first occasion where Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams have been invited to meet on United States soil. “They say that they want to do everything by June,” Zelensky noted, highlighting the compressed timeline established by US mediators.
The planned Miami session would be the third installment of US-brokered negotiations, building on two previous rounds held in Abu Dhabi since January. While the Abu Dhabi talks successfully facilitated a major prisoner exchange, they failed to resolve the territorial disputes that remain central to the conflict. Russia maintains control over approximately 20 percent of Ukraine and is demanding recognition of these occupied zones plus further territorial gains in the strategically vital Donetsk region.
Ukrainian leadership has steadfastly rejected any territorial losses, maintaining that sovereign boundaries must be respected regardless of military pressure. Moscow has characterized its territorial requirements as non-negotiable and has threatened to intensify military operations if diplomatic efforts do not produce favorable territorial outcomes. This impasse over territory represents the primary obstacle to achieving a lasting peace settlement.
While diplomatic channels remain active, military conflict persists. Zelensky announced on Saturday that Russian forces had struck facilities critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations the night before. The attacks caused reductions in power generation at several nuclear reactor units, with one unit experiencing an automatic emergency shutdown. Zelensky characterized the strikes as unprecedented terrorism and insisted that Russia must demonstrate commitment to negotiations by ending attacks on vital civilian infrastructure.
