Russia’s Warning to Trump: Don’t Dictate Trade Partners

The Kremlin has issued a stern warning to US President Donald Trump: don’t dictate trade partners to sovereign nations. Speaking on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that any attempt to “force countries to stop trading with Russia is illegal.” The statement came in direct response to Trump’s recent threats of revised tariffs against India.
Trump’s warning, which was made in a social media post, accused India of buying cheap Russian oil and selling it on the open market for a profit. He linked this trade to the war in Ukraine and threatened to “substantially” raise tariffs on Indian goods, a measure that would follow the 25% tariffs already imposed on India on August 1.
India’s government has also stood its ground, issuing a forceful statement that called the targeting of New Delhi by the US and European Union “unjustified and unreasonable.” The Ministry of External Affairs declared that India would take “all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.”
This diplomatic exchange highlights the growing challenges to a unipolar global order. Russia’s vocal defense of India underscores the strengthening ties between the two nations and their shared interest in resisting what they see as US overreach. Both Moscow and New Delhi are asserting their right to an independent foreign policy.
