Cambodia Confirms Troop Repositioning Deal with Thailand

Cambodia’s Defence Ministry has confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Thailand to reposition military forces to their previous border locations. This significant development follows a deadly clash on May 28 in an undemarcated area, which led to the reinforcement of troops by both nations and heightened regional tensions. The confirmed deal signifies a move towards de-escalation.
The statement from Cambodian officials emphasized a shared desire to ease the strained situation that emerged after the fatal incident. This aligns with recent assurances from Thai defense authorities regarding ongoing discussions aimed at diffusing the crisis and returning to troop positions established in the previous year.
For several days, both governments have publicly affirmed their commitment to a peaceful resolution, though specifics on the extent of military reinforcement remained undisclosed. The enduring border disputes, rooted in historical maps from 1907, continue to be a source of friction along the extensive shared frontier.
Looking ahead, Thailand and Cambodia plan to engage in bilateral talks, with a Joint Boundary Committee meeting slated for June 14 to address border issues. However, Cambodia has again formally sought intervention from the International Court of Justice, arguing for a more impartial and lasting solution, a proposal Thailand has consistently rejected in favor of bilateral negotiations.
