A new exchange of accusations between Russia and Ukraine has introduced fresh obstacles into already challenging peace negotiations. Russian authorities claim Ukraine launched a massive drone assault on President Putin’s residence, while Ukrainian leadership dismisses these allegations as manufactured lies designed to disrupt diplomatic efforts.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of deploying 91 long-range drones against the presidential compound in Novgorod region over a two-day period in late December. He labeled the alleged operation as state terrorism and confirmed that Russian air defenses successfully intercepted all threats. Despite this claimed success, Lavrov warned that Moscow would implement military countermeasures and had identified specific retaliation targets.
President Zelensky rejected the entire Russian narrative, characterizing it as fabricated propaganda intended to create justification for attacks on Ukrainian government buildings in Kyiv. He suggested that Moscow was deliberately attempting to sabotage diplomatic progress, particularly efforts involving coordination with Trump administration officials. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine’s actions consistently support peace processes rather than undermining them.
The timing of these accusations has intensified concerns about the viability of ongoing diplomatic initiatives. Lavrov indicated that the alleged attack would necessitate reassessment of Russia’s negotiating position, though Moscow would remain engaged in discussions. He suggested that Ukrainian actions, as characterized by Russian authorities, demonstrated escalation that demanded response and would influence future negotiations.
Zelensky appealed to world leaders to speak out against what he described as Russian manipulation tactics. He referenced Moscow’s history of attacking major Ukrainian government facilities, including the Cabinet of Ministers building, as evidence of a pattern where Russia accuses others of actions it regularly commits. The Ukrainian president stressed that preventing Russian disruption of peace initiatives requires active international engagement and consistent public exposure of disinformation campaigns. He warned that global silence effectively enables Moscow to continue using manufactured crises to shift blame and justify continued military operations.
