4 AM Breakthrough: Trump’s Tax Bill Advances in House Amid GOP Discord

Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending bill has advanced in the US House of Representatives, but only after a contentious overnight session culminated in a 4:00 AM breakthrough on a key procedural vote. Speaker Mike Johnson’s push for rapid passage has been met with significant internal Republican dissent, alongside unanimous Democratic opposition, primarily over the bill’s content and its considerable financial implications. The razor-thin Republican majority faces a formidable challenge.
The “rule” to enable debate and a final vote was stalled for hours by lawmakers, forcing an unusual late-night vote. This delay highlights the deep fractures within the Republican caucus, as a handful of members joined Democrats in temporarily blocking the legislative progress. The Speaker’s determination, however, ultimately prevailed, signaling a critical step forward for the highly anticipated legislation.
President Donald Trump actively intervened in the legislative gridlock, engaging in extensive phone calls and meetings with reluctant Republicans. He also took to Truth Social to castigate the holdouts, warning that “MAGA IS NOT HAPPY, AND IT’S COSTING YOU VOTES!!!” His direct and public pressure demonstrates the intensity of his demand for the bill’s swift enactment before the Independence Day holiday.
Despite clearing this hurdle, the bill, which the Senate already approved, faces an uphill battle to secure final House passage. Conservative Republicans are vocal in their criticism, with Congressman Keith Self lambasting the Senate’s changes to the bill’s framework and accusing House leadership of attempting to “cram this broken bill down our throats.” Concerns over its projected $3.3 trillion contribution to the federal deficit continue to mount.
