Türkiye Cautions Greece on Israel Defense Deal Affecting Regional Economic Ties

The complex dynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean region continue to evolve as Turkey and Greece navigate their longstanding disputes while seeking improved bilateral relations. Recent developments have seen Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan caution Greece against actions that could escalate regional tensions, particularly concerning its defense collaborations with Israel.

Fidan’s remarks come amid ongoing disagreements between the two countries over maritime boundaries and the military status of the Aegean islands. Turkey argues that these islands should remain demilitarized as per certain international agreements. Highlighting Greece’s increased military cooperation with Israel, Fidan expressed Turkey’s desire for positive relations but urged Athens to consider Turkey’s security concerns more seriously.

Greece, for its part, maintains that its defense initiatives, including those with Israel, are critical for safeguarding its sovereignty and addressing security threats. The Greek government insists that its military measures are defensive and necessary, given the regional challenges it faces.

Beyond its concerns with Greece, Turkey has also voiced criticism regarding Israel’s actions in Syria, which Fidan deemed potentially destabilizing. He reiterated Turkey’s support for Syria’s efforts to achieve security and economic recovery, advocating for diplomatic solutions to regional disputes.

In the context of broader regional security, Fidan highlighted ongoing cooperation between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The three nations are working towards a structured security partnership, exploring avenues to bolster their collaborative efforts. Turkey remains committed to addressing regional security issues, including those involving Yemen and threats to Saudi Arabia, through diplomatic engagement and coordination.
