Péter Szijjártó Leaves Hungarian Politics to Join BYD’s Business Ventures

Péter Szijjártó, the former Foreign Minister of Hungary, has decided to step down from his role in parliament to join the Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD. Announcing his resignation on social media, Szijjártó revealed he accepted “a highly prestigious offer” from the company and would transition from his political career to take on the responsibility of overseeing BYD’s external relations and spearheading new business ventures.

BYD is recognized as the largest producer of new-energy vehicles in the world. The company is currently enhancing its footprint in Hungary with a significant manufacturing facility in Szeged, which has been identified as one of the most substantial economic investments in the country. Szijjártó was instrumental in supporting this project during his tenure in government, highlighting his pivotal role in fostering economic collaboration between Hungary and China.

Over the years, BYD has established itself as a leading force in the electric vehicle market, having sold over 4.5 million vehicles globally. Its success has seen it surpass several major competitors, further cementing its position as a dominant player in the industry. This strategic move by Szijjártó underscores the strengthening economic relations between Hungary and China, particularly within the burgeoning automotive and electric vehicle sectors.

Within Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, discussions regarding Szijjártó’s departure have been ongoing, involving top officials such as Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. As the party navigates these changes, its executive committee is poised to make decisions concerning alterations within the parliamentary group in the immediate future.
