Hungary Airlines Boosts Economy by Expanding Cargo Service Operations

Hungary Airlines is adjusting its operations as a result of evolving air cargo conditions in Europe, which have been influenced by a new customs duty. The €3 charge on small shipments, effective from July 1, has impacted the volume of e-commerce cargo throughout Europe. Retailers saw a surge in shipments in June as they hurried to transport goods before the duty was enforced, followed by a noticeable decline and longer processing times in July. While the market is showing signs of stabilization, the industry is also bracing for a further €2 processing fee anticipated in November.

During this period, Hungary Airlines had planned routine maintenance for its primary aircraft, an Airbus A330-243F with registration HA-LHU. Unfortunately, global supply-chain disruptions have prolonged the aircraft’s C-check until mid-September. The airline expects the freighter to resume full operations by the end of that month. In response to the fluctuating market conditions, the airline intends to adjust its route network, refine cargo-handling procedures, and temporarily cut back on flight frequencies to enhance load factors across its aircraft fleet.

In a related development, Hungary Airlines is set to part ways with its second aircraft, the Airbus A330-243P2F HA-ZTO, as the owner has opted to sell it. Despite this, the airline remains steadfast in its commitment to expand its fleet and is exploring leasing and other growth opportunities. This strategic focus underscores Hungary Airlines’ determination to maintain and potentially increase its operational capacity.

Looking to diversify its services, Hungary Airlines is venturing into specialized cargo sectors from the third quarter of the year. The airline plans to enter both the live-animal transportation and temperature-controlled cargo markets. By implementing real-time monitoring technology, Hungary Airlines aims to offer more specialized services, tapping into higher-margin opportunities and catering to specific customer needs.
