The European Parliament’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation from Hungary has voiced concerns over what they perceive as the European Commission’s lack of response to recent political and constitutional changes in Hungary. These developments, according to the delegation, could potentially weaken the country’s democratic frameworks.
At a joint session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László pressed the Commission for clarity on its stance regarding several contentious issues. These include amendments to Hungary’s constitution, limitations on political competition, modifications impacting parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions.
The Hungarian lawmakers highlighted that while the European Commission had previously expressed concerns about the rule of law in Hungary, even going as far as withholding EU funds, it has yet to address the latest changes. They questioned whether these constitutional amendments align with the democratic standards expected within the European Union.
The FIDESZ–KDNP representatives emphasized that democratic principles should be uniformly upheld across all EU member nations. Despite the pointed inquiries during the hearing, Commission representatives did not offer detailed answers to the concerns raised by the Hungarian delegation.
