The bravery of Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner, likely prevented additional deaths during Sunday’s Bondi Beach shooting that killed 15 people at a Hanukkah celebration. Ahmed’s split-second decision to physically confront one of the two gunmen targeting approximately 1,000 Jewish community members demonstrated extraordinary courage under fire. Witnesses described him wrestling the weapon away from the shooter despite sustaining gunshot wounds to his arm and hand that would later require surgery. His intervention during the roughly ten-minute attack disrupted the shooters’ plans and created opportunities for others to escape.
