An upcoming change affects ChatGPT users on Mac computers. Beginning January 15, 2026, the voice conversation feature will no longer be available in the macOS desktop application. OpenAI announced this modification in update notes, explaining it as necessary for building more unified voice experiences.
Mac users won’t completely lose voice functionality. The feature continues operating through the web version of ChatGPT, accessible from any browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android platforms. Windows desktop users also keep their voice access. Only the Mac standalone app is losing this capability.
The reasoning for targeting specifically the Mac version remains somewhat unclear. OpenAI’s statement about unified experiences hints that the current Mac implementation may have technical limitations or incompatibilities with future development directions. Voice is becoming increasingly important as AI companies expand their product offerings.
This change particularly impacts users with specific workflows or needs. Those relying on voice for accessibility purposes, professionals who multitask with hands-free AI conversation, or users preferring verbal communication over typing will all face adjustments. Alternative platforms exist but may not provide the same experience.
Most analysts interpret this as a transitional measure. OpenAI’s demonstrated commitment to voice technology in other contexts suggests Mac users will eventually see enhanced voice features return. The temporary discontinuation likely reflects infrastructure improvements that the current Mac app cannot accommodate.
