Apple Gambles on Aesthetics as AI Development Appears to Stall

Apple is making a clear bet that superior aesthetics can keep it at the top of the tech world, even as its progress on artificial intelligence appears to be stalling. The company’s fall showcase was a lavish celebration of the new iPhone Air’s 5.6mm thin design, while news on the much-needed overhaul for its AI assistant, Siri, was conspicuously absent.
The event, promoted as “awe-dropping,” focused heavily on the physical attributes of its new products. The $999 iPhone Air’s “spacecraft titanium” body dominated the conversation, positioned as the next evolution of smartphone design. This stands in sharp contrast to rivals like Google, which have centered their recent launches around the powerful capabilities of their generative AI models.
Wall Street analysts have already noted that Apple is perceived as lagging in the AI race. The lack of any significant “Apple Intelligence” updates and the confirmation of another delay for the new Siri will do little to change that perception. Reports of a potential partnership with Google for its Gemini AI further suggest that Apple may be looking for outside help to catch up.
For now, consumers are being offered impressive hardware. The iPhone 17 line has better cameras and batteries, the AirPods Pro 3 can now translate languages, and the Apple Watch Series 11 can detect hypertension. These are all valuable features, but they don’t address the growing question of whether Apple is falling behind in the next great technological shift: artificial intelligence.
