Hungary’s Constitutional Debate Engages Venice Commission, Impacting Economic Stability

At Sándor Palace, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok recently engaged in discussions with representatives from the Venice Commission to address constitutional issues that have arisen in the wake of Hungary’s recent elections. The meeting was attended by notable figures from the Commission, including its President Marta Cartabia, Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini, and Christoph Grabenwarter, a member from Austria. The primary focus of their talks was the ongoing constitutional dispute affecting Hungary’s public institutions.

Back in May, President Sulyok reached out to the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional law, seeking expert advice to tackle these challenges while ensuring that Hungary’s constitutional practices align with European principles. The invitation underscored the seriousness with which the Hungarian leadership views the evolving situation.

Responding to the request, the Venice Commission committed to reviewing the issue with urgency. The Commission has since initiated consultations in Budapest, aiming to gather comprehensive information on the matter. This step is crucial for formulating recommendations that can effectively address the constitutional concerns.

The Presidential Office has expressed a positive outlook regarding the involvement of the Venice Commission. They anticipate that the expert recommendations will play a vital role in safeguarding Hungary’s constitutional framework, ensuring it remains consistent with European standards. The collaboration signifies a proactive approach by Hungary to resolve its internal constitutional disputes with guidance from seasoned European legal experts.
