Greece Enhances Diplomatic Efforts at UN Amid Regional Instability

Greece is stepping up its diplomatic activities at the United Nations General Assembly, engaging in high-level discussions on crucial issues such as regional security, maritime safety, and international cooperation. Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has been at the forefront of this initiative, participating in both trilateral and bilateral meetings with various countries amid ongoing regional conflicts and instability.

Gerapetritis underscored the significance of Greece’s trilateral discussions with Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt, as well as bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from countries including India, Brazil, and Eritrea. These discussions are viewed as pivotal in the context of Greece and Cyprus’s efforts to bolster regional partnerships, particularly in light of the continuing tensions in the Middle East.

A notable event during the assembly was co-hosted by Greece and India, focusing on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. This high-level event explored the applications of these technologies in shipping, maritime security, and ensuring freedom of navigation. Additionally, Gerapetritis took part in the inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, reflecting Greece’s vested interest in protecting maritime routes and maintaining the unimpeded movement of goods, given its status as a major global shipping nation.

Looking ahead, Greece is preparing to take on the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October, marking its second presidency within its current two-year term. Gerapetritis remarked on the significance of this presidency, which comes at a time when armed conflicts and international crises are expected to remain central issues for the Council. This period will also coincide with the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General.

Greece’s broader agenda at the General Assembly encompasses discussions on pressing global issues, including the Middle East situation, the war in Ukraine, developments in Sub-Saharan Africa, UN reform, and the strengthening of multilateral cooperation. Through these engagements, Greece aims to reinforce its diplomatic presence and contribute to international efforts addressing complex global challenges.
