Allies Shift Tone: Canada, UK, France Signal Harder Line on Israeli Actions

In a notable shift from traditional diplomacy, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France have collectively warned Israel of possible sanctions, citing disproportionate military actions and escalating humanitarian concerns in Gaza.
The joint statement, released Monday, criticizes the “wholly inadequate” provision of aid and labels the suffering in Gaza as “intolerable.” It underscores a significant policy message: support for Israel’s right to defend itself does not extend to unchecked expansion or settlement building.
Israel’s renewed ground and air campaigns and the evacuation order for Khan Younis are framed by Prime Minister Netanyahu as efforts to pressure Hamas. However, his remarks about controlling all of Gaza and encouraging “voluntary” Palestinian emigration have raised global alarm.
The warning also covered Israeli settlements in the West Bank, explicitly calling them illegal and a threat to long-term peace and security.
