Türkiye and Greece Plan High-Level Talks in February Amid Aegean Disputes

Türkiye and Greece are preparing to hold a meeting of their High-Level Cooperation Council in mid-February, alongside talks between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The discussions come despite ongoing disagreements over maritime issues in the Aegean Sea.
The council, established in 2010, serves as a formal platform for addressing bilateral issues and promoting cooperation at the highest political level. While expectations for major breakthroughs remain limited, the meeting is seen as a step toward maintaining dialogue and stability between the two neighbours.
Tensions persist over competing claims in the Aegean, particularly concerning continental shelf boundaries, exclusive economic zones, and the status of certain islands. Greece has stated that it is willing to discuss only maritime boundary delimitation, while Türkiye continues to assert its rights and interests in the region.
Despite these differences, both sides are expected to explore practical cooperation in areas such as trade, transport, and confidence-building measures. The planned talks are viewed as reinforcing a period of relative calm in relations, even as long-standing disputes remain unresolved.
