During an address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Hungarian President András Baka highlighted a pressing “crisis of trust” within the UN, urging the organization to uphold international law uniformly across all nations. Baka emphasized that no nation should be exempt from the rule of law, calling on the UN to maintain its ability to act decisively, treat all member states equitably, and apply common principles consistently.
Turning his attention to Ukraine, President Baka condemned the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia, labeling it a violation of the UN Charter. He reaffirmed Hungary’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing the importance of diplomacy in ending the conflict. However, he insisted that any lasting peace agreement must respect Ukraine’s recognized borders and sovereignty.
Baka’s speech also addressed the situation in the Middle East, advocating for full adherence to international humanitarian law. He called for the safe and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected in the region, underscoring the need for global cooperation in these efforts.
On the topic of migration, President Baka stated that Hungary would continue to combat irregular migration while ensuring respect for human dignity and the protection of refugees. His comments reflect Hungary’s ongoing stance on migration, emphasizing the balance between national security and humanitarian obligations.
