Greece and France United on Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Law

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis announced that France fully aligns with Greece’s stance on adherence to maritime law in the Eastern Mediterranean. This agreement followed discussions with his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, in Paris.

Both ministers emphasized their dedication to ensuring all nations comply with the International Law of the Sea, especially in the East Mediterranean. Regarding Libya, Gerapetritis stated they agreed on a “framework of understanding” to ensure member states exercise their sovereign rights based on international law without deviation. He noted Barrot’s keen interest in Greece’s evolving relationship with Libya.

Gerapetritis also highlighted that the French government supports a political solution for Libya, aiming for a unified and strong regime. He underscored the growing migration flows from Libya impacting both Greece and Italy, stressing that Libya must strictly observe international law, particularly regulations concerning the International Law of the Sea.
