Iran-US Tensions Cause Over 7% Increase in Oil Market Prices

Escalating military tensions between Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia have triggered a significant increase in global oil prices, with concerns mounting over potential disruptions to energy supplies. Brent crude saw a spike of nearly 8%, reaching around $90.75 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose almost 7% to approximately $84.76 per barrel. These sharp increases followed renewed military exchanges that have raised the specter of a prolonged conflict in the region.

The latest developments saw Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claim responsibility for launching ballistic missiles at U.S. military facilities located in Jordan. This action, according to the IRGC, was in retaliation for recent American military maneuvers. Concurrently, coordinated strikes were carried out by U.S. and Saudi forces against positions held by Iran-backed militants in Iraq. The operation reportedly targeted sites linked to logistics and weapons storage, which have been associated with repeated drone attacks on military and energy infrastructure.

Heightened worries about maritime security have also emerged as a result of the conflict. The IRGC reported that its naval forces intercepted and attacked three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz after they allegedly ignored warnings regarding navigation. In a separate incident, Yemen’s Houthi rebels stated they had targeted a Saudi-linked oil tanker in the Red Sea, further escalating the risks associated with commercial shipping in the region.

These renewed hostilities have amplified concerns over potential disruptions to two critical energy transit routes: the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Both are vital for global energy shipments. Market analysts are cautioning that continued attacks on shipping lanes and energy infrastructure could sustain elevated oil prices and lead to increased volatility in the global markets.
