Google Maintains Structure, Avoids Economic Disruption Amid Antitrust Case Win

In a significant legal development, a U.S. judge has dismissed the Department of Justice’s bid to compel Google to divest its advertising exchange, AdX. This decision enables Google to maintain control over a crucial segment of its advertising technology operations. While Judge Leonie Brinkema denied the request for the sale of AdX, she did approve most of the proposed limitations on Google’s business practices.

This ruling comes in the wake of a 2025 judgment that determined Google had unlawfully preserved its monopolistic hold on the markets for publisher ad servers and advertising exchanges. The Justice Department, joined by several states, contended that Google’s prior actions warranted the relinquishment of its control over AdX. In contrast, Google contended that the separation of the platform would be technically challenging and could potentially disrupt its customers.

The decision reflects another hurdle for U.S. antitrust officials in their ongoing efforts to dismantle large tech conglomerates. Prior legal actions targeting other major technology firms have similarly failed to achieve the forced sell-off of assets, underscoring the complexity of regulating these industry giants.

While the ruling permits Google to retain its advertising exchange, it also enforces behavioral modifications aimed at mitigating competition concerns and addressing how the company interacts with publishers. These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure fair competition within the digital advertising landscape.
